Dominique found the first wild asparagus of the season just before we left. Before moving to France, I really didn’t know that there was wild asparagus. We were climbing to the top of a large hill – aren’t we always – and Dominique said look! I did. I saw nothing. Do you see it? The cathedral, sure. No, look. I felt like I was back in college, riding home with Mike Sheldon (the future game warden) and he pointed out every wild animal – Did you see it? Sure, I said. No, you didn’t. Sure I saw it. “You’re not even looking out the right window,” he said.
I looked around, but had no idea what Dominque saw. The asparagus he said. I was looking for some sort of 6” thick bundle, but I couldn’t see it. He picked it. To be honest, I barely saw it then. That was it? How in the world would anyone see that in a see of green.
I do like a challenge, and I began searching. I began finding. Slowly, then more each season. Now, just off the path, I find myself bending over before I even see it – I can sense it. Truly. And I love it!
This is off my beaten path, literally and figuratively. This is where we see something new. Outside and inside.
There is not just one way to be ourselves. We can find our way every day. There’s a whole new world out there – do you see it?
